HVAC Tech Tip: Stop Killing Compressors with Liquid
Scroll compressors were once marketed as capable of handling small amounts of liquid refrigerant. That claim is completely outdated. Any liquid in the suction line is drawn directly into the scroll plates at startup and can shatter them instantly.
If a compressor makes a loud noise and suddenly stops pumping, liquid slugging in the suction line is likely the primary cause. The fix is simple and prevents costly failures: always use a liquid charging adapter when charging R-410A instead of feeding liquid directly into the suction line.
